I'm no expert, but poking around online a bit, this looks like it was a Western Rat Snake; one of the pictures at the site looks pretty similar. We see tiny "common earth" snakes in our yard regularly, but at just over two feet long, this rat snake is the biggest snake I've seen or found dead here in the city. Amazing how critters like this survey here in one of the most crowded parts of New Orleans.
